AbstractConstant physical work is the leading cause oflow back pain (LBP) in nurses, which affects their well-beingand working efficiency. With this study, we aimed to explorethe features of lumbar muscles including multifidi (MF) andmusculus transversus abdominis (MTA) of nurses with LBPsuffering from lumbar disc herniation (LDH). We estimated thedegree of lumbar muscle strain by comparing the lumbarmuscle thickness between nurses with LDH and healthysubjects. In this experiment participated thirty-one patientswith LDH and 37 healthy controls. We asked the subjects toperform five cycles of forward and backward bending from astanding position. Meanwhile, we captured sonomyographicimages of multifidi (MF) and musculi transversus abdominis(MTA). As results, the muscle thickness of MTA from rightside showed significant difference between healthy femalesubjects and female nurses with LDH ( p=0.001<0.05 ). LDHsubjects exhibited a lower muscle thickness than that of healthysubjects during forward bending. Also, the MTA thickness ofcontrols was lower than that of LDH nurses during backwardbending. We also found that higher age of LDH nurses wasassociated with higher muscle thickness of the two exploredmuscles. Higher scores from the Oswestry DisabilityQuestionnaire scores correspond to a higher thickness of rightMF and left MTA and lower thickness of the right MTA,respectively.
